Welcome to the technology page at BrianHoff.com. This is where I post news and information about new and emerging technologies that I find exciting.

Composite UI Application Block

First up, if you're into .NET and are concerned with staying on top of your game, you're going to need to get into CAB. CAB is the Composite UI Application Block and it clears the path to some truly wonderful development frameworks to come. CAB is composed of three assemblies that give architects a ton of awesome tools to throw into their enterprise applications. Those assemblies, CompositeUI, CompositeUI.Winforms and ObjectBuilder allow you to design applications that load modules at runtime, freeing you to create hot-pluggable and extensible apps.

Check out CAB at MSDN.

While I'm at it, I'll throw some kudos to Ward Bell and the gang over at IdeaBlade. Ward has truly been blazing the way for CAB and is one of the more profound evangelists for the technology that I've ever had the pleasure to meet. Check out the "Why CAB" webinar and see what he has to say. Don't forget to check out Cabana while you're over there.

Smart Client Software Factory

What's better than CAB? CAB with code generation capabilites, of course! The patterns & practices group has released the Smart Client Software Factory (SCSF) to help architects demostrate and enforce best practices in Smart Client application development. SCSF combines CAB with the Guidance Automation Toolkit to create a framework for quickly developing complex user interfaces.

Check out SCSF at MSDN.

Chances are you've never heard of Silverlight, so you're probably asking yourselves the "what the heck is it?" question. In short, Silverlight is Microsoft's answer to Flash. The official line is:

"Microsoft® SilverlightTM is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of .NET based media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web."

This is definitely something to keep an eye on.

Check out Silverlight at Microsoft.com.
